Making Rubber Duckie Floats for Krewe Of Muses… Using A Robot

Sculpting robot ‘Pixie’ keeps amazing everybody with it’s versatile capabilities. For Mardi Gras 2017, the Krewe of Muses asked if we could make them some ‘rubber duckies’ to follow their signature ‘Bath Tub’ float. And so we got Pixie to do just that!

Our digital 3D artist Brennan Steele modeled a mama duck and 3 baby duckies and translated the 3D models into a ‘tool path’, which is more or less a set of instructions that robot Pixie understands.

Working over 100 hours unattended, Pixie milled out the individual pieces of the 30′ long x 12′ wide x 17′ tall Mama Duck and created the base for the molds of the 20′ long  x 12′ wide x 10′ tall Baby Ducks. Nothing short of 4,750 square feet of Styrofoam was used!

Reporters were intrigued by the ‘Duck’ story!  Check out some coverage on WWLTV’s Facebook or YouTube page. Additionally, you can find some more footage of the Rubber Ducks in action on this NOLA.com Facebook post.
